In February this year, I had the opportunity to photograph an editorial feature for Wedding Collection magazine. The venue was the Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton Square. It was an interesting experience, as we are used to a different approach when working with brides. It was certainly easier to work with professional models, as they can pose themselves, and I could concentrate on the photography. One was my images was chosen as the cover photo. Even if this was not the first cover I have done as a photographer, it was the first for a commercial magazine in the wedding industry.

Two of my recent weddings were featured in the December and March wedding magazine issues. The weekend of 21-22 February was the Expo4Brides bridal fair at the Pretoria Show grounds. I exhibited there as well, and my yellow and white stall looked very upbeat. I also met the designers Johan en Fritz, from F Wilson Fashion Design, and took a few shots of them working behind the scenes for their runway show. It was a very successful weekend, and I met many wonderful couples.

I have photographed Melissa Minne for 5 years now. Not only is she very beautiful, but a skilled make-up artist as well. The kind that makes you look like a cover model. We exhibited together at the Pretoria Expo4Brides in February, and we had to photograph a model for the event. Her friend Michelle volunteered and she was given a complete hair and beauty make-over. The poster of Michelle at the show guaranteed lots of business for Melissa.

This was the second session with studio photography and professional make-up. The themes were Pink on Pink and Dark and Dramatic.

It was a warm summer’s day in December when Brett and Rentia tied the knot. Rentia looked radiant in her gown, and reminded me of Angelina Jolie. Maybe that is why Brett’s knees buckled during the ceremony. As soon as the reception started just after sunset, a violent thunderstorm broke out. Red Ivory’s vantage point made a very good front row seat to nature’s display of power.

I met Nadja when she was working at MAC as an make-up artist. She had the most beautiful eyes I have seen in a long time, and I quickly convinced her to come in a for a portrait session. Nadja is currently working as a stylist and her talent for creating looks will serve her well.

Last year I photographed Sulette and Eugene’s wedding in February. She is a make-up artists and we have collaborated on a few projects for make-up portraits. This was our first session in the studio. The themes were Purple & pink and Golden browns. The make-up was done specifically for studio photography.

Greenleaves was the setting for the November wedding of Steve and Michelle. The trees in the orchard were full of leaves and it was the first time I saw it like that. The orchard has such simple symmetry with the trees in line that it creates a dramatic backdrop. Michelle wore a wedding dress from Catherine’s Collection, and was asked to model it at the Expo4Brides for the designer. They are a lovely couple and I had a lot of fun working with them.

Nadia and James-Henry got married in Kroonstad, Freestate on a lovely early summers day. What I love about small town weddings are the unexpected locations you can shoot photos. We found a carwash a block from the church with nice graphic and colourful elements. The venue was Arcadia Guesthouse, and had beautiful gardens as a backdrop. The foyer made a good backdrop for the family pictures. I used studio lights and did them while the reception was in full swing. It matched their black and white theme of decor.
